Greece Commits to Crete's Future With Major VOAK Motorway Investment

Monday, 20 April 2026/Haniotika Nea/1
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced from Heraklion that his government is committing to major infrastructure investment in Crete, describing it as equipping the island for the next 50 years. The centerpiece of the announcement is the completion of the VOAK, the north-coast motorway that will eventually run the full length of Crete from Kissamos in the far west to Siteia in the far east. Once finished, the highway will significantly cut travel times across the island, making it easier for visitors to reach destinations in both eastern and western Crete from the main airports in Heraklion and Chania. Currently, several sections of the route remain incomplete or use older national roads. The project represents one of the largest road infrastructure undertakings in Greek history and is expected to reshape how both tourists and residents move around the island.
