Crete Mountain Guides Protest Samaria Closures

Monday, 15 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
The Mountain Guides Association of Crete has issued a statement criticizing what it calls unjustified closures of Samaria National Park, one of the island's most visited natural attractions. The association is formally protesting to OFYPEKA, the Greek body responsible for managing natural protected areas, and calling on all relevant authorities to review the closure decisions. Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of western Crete, draws tens of thousands of hikers each year and is a key destination for visitors seeking outdoor experiences. While specific reasons for the closures have not been detailed in the statement, tourists planning to hike the gorge should check current access status before traveling to the trailhead at Xyloskalo. Conditions such as weather, fire risk, or infrastructure can cause temporary closures at short notice throughout the season.
