Back to newsSamaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and a premier hiking destination in western Crete, has reopened to visitors for the 2026 season. Located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of the Chania regional unit, the gorge runs approximately 16 kilometers from the village of Omalos down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. It typically opens in spring once winter conditions and snow melt make the trail safe to walk. The gorge is accessible by bus from Chania to the Xyloskalo entrance at the top, and visitors exit by ferry from Agia Roumeli to Hora Sfakion or Sougia. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and plan for a full day. Entrance fees apply and the gorge closes before dark each evening.
