Back to newsThe Region of Crete and the Crete Development Organization (OAK) have signed a formal agreement to manage the Omalos Reservoir, located on the Omalos Plateau in the White Mountains of western Crete. The contract covers irrigation operations for the 2026 and 2027 seasons and runs through February 28, 2028.
The Omalos Plateau sits at around 1,100 meters elevation and is best known as the starting point for the Samaria Gorge hike, one of the most popular trails in Greece. The reservoir supports local agricultural activity in the area, helping sustain the plateau's farming communities. This agreement ensures coordinated water management across two full irrigation cycles.
For visitors, the agreement has no direct impact on access to the Samaria Gorge or surrounding trails. The gorge typically opens in April and closes in October depending on conditions.
