Meningitis Case Triggers School Closure in Heraklion, Crete

Sunday, 10 May 2026/Flashnews/1
A case of meningitis has been confirmed at a vocational high school (EPAL) in the Heraklion region of Crete. The mayor of the Festos municipality ordered the school to remain closed on Monday to allow for full disinfection of the premises. Meningitis is a bacterial or viral infection causing inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While this incident is contained within a school environment and poses no direct threat to tourists, visitors should be aware that meningitis can spread through close contact. As a precaution, travelers experiencing sudden severe headache, fever, stiff neck, or sensitivity to light should seek medical attention promptly. The nearest major hospital is the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI). This closure does not affect tourist sites, beaches, or public transport in the area.
