Captain Asleep at Wheel: Cargo Ship Spills Baking Soda in Aegean

Wednesday, 6 May 2026/Flashnews/1
A cargo ship called CORSAGE C, sailing under a Vanuatu flag, ran into trouble in the Aegean Sea near Andros island after its captain fell asleep at the helm. The vessel had departed from Albania bound for Ukraine, carrying 3,000 metric tons of baking soda. The cargo entered the sea following the incident. Baking soda is non-toxic and dissolves in water, so no significant environmental threat to swimmers or marine life is expected. This incident occurred in the central Aegean and is not near Cretan waters. Ferry routes between Crete and the Cyclades pass through this area, so travelers sailing between islands should check with their ferry operator for any route or schedule updates, though no disruptions have been reported at this time.
