Samaria Gorge Remains Open Monday Despite Rain Forecast

Sunday, 24 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Samaria Gorge in the Chania region of western Crete will remain open on Monday, according to an announcement from OFYPEKA, the Greek organization responsible for managing natural parks and protected areas. However, authorities are urging visitors to exercise caution, as rainfall is forecast for the area. The gorge, one of the longest in Europe at approximately 16 kilometers, attracts large numbers of hikers each season and requires several hours to complete on foot. Wet conditions can make the rocky trail slippery and increase the risk of flash flooding in the narrow canyon sections. Visitors planning to hike Samaria on Monday should wear appropriate footwear, carry rain gear, monitor weather updates before setting out, and follow all instructions from park staff at the entrance. The gorge is typically open from May through October, weather permitting.
