Crete Quake Survivors Still Waiting: Five Years in Temporary Housing

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Five years after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the village of Arkalochori in the Heraklion regional unit of central Crete on September 27, 2021, many survivors are still living in temporary housing and waiting for promised reconstruction support. The quake killed one person, injured dozens, and left hundreds of homes and buildings uninhabitable. Despite government pledges, bureaucratic delays have slowed rebuilding efforts significantly. For visitors, Arkalochori and surrounding villages in the Minoa Pediados municipality remain accessible, though some structures in the area still show visible damage. Travelers passing through the region should be aware that parts of the local infrastructure are still being restored. The situation reflects broader challenges in post-disaster recovery management across rural Greece.
