Starting today, April 30, Greek authorities have activated the Daily Fire Risk Prediction Map for the 2026 fire prevention season. The map uses five risk levels, each triggering a corresponding escalation in emergency readiness across the country, including Crete.
The fire prevention period officially begins tomorrow, May 1, and runs through the summer months when dry conditions and strong winds make wildfires a serious risk across the island.
Tourists visiting Crete during this period should check the daily fire risk map before heading into rural areas, forests, or hiking trails. On high-risk days, outdoor fires, barbecues, and smoking in natural areas are prohibited. If you see smoke or fire, call 199 (Greek fire service) immediately. Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhausts can ignite fires.
