Greece Advances BOAK Highway Project to Cut Crete Travel Times

Saturday, 16 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greece's Minister of Infrastructure, Christos Dimas, highlighted major road development projects in Crete at the 16th New Democracy party congress, with a strong focus on the BOAK (Northern Road Axis of Crete) and road safety improvements across the island. The BOAK is a long-planned east-west highway that will significantly reduce travel times between Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, and other key destinations in eastern Crete. The minister's emphasis signals continued government commitment to accelerating construction. For visitors, the ongoing works may cause temporary disruptions on certain routes, particularly in central and eastern Crete. Travelers are advised to check local road conditions before driving and to allow extra time on affected stretches. Once complete, the BOAK will make exploring Crete's eastern regions considerably faster and safer.
