Crete Water Dam Project Revived in Greek Parliament After Funding Delays

Saturday, 30 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A water infrastructure project in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete, the Chochlakia Reservoir and Agios Ioannis Dam, has been brought before the Greek Parliament for debate. The project has repeatedly been dropped from successive funding programs, prompting local MP Katerina Spyridaki to raise the issue at the national level. Lasithi, a largely agricultural and rural area, relies on adequate water management for both farming and tourism services. The repeated delays in securing financing have frustrated local officials and communities. While the project has no immediate impact on tourist visits to the region, its completion would improve long-term water supply reliability across eastern Crete, an area popular for agritourism, the Lasithi Plateau, and the Minoan palace of Zakros. No construction timeline has been confirmed.
