Unexploded WWII Naval Mine Found Off Crete

An unexploded naval mine was discovered in the sea near Kokkino Chorio, a coastal area in the Chania region of western Crete. The ordnance was found approximately 10 meters from the shoreline, at a depth of between 12 and 15 meters. Authorities were notified and the relevant services responded to assess and manage the find. Such discoveries are not uncommon in Greek waters, as remnants of World War II-era munitions are occasionally uncovered by divers, fishermen, or during seabed surveys. The Greek Navy's explosive ordnance disposal unit is responsible for handling these situations. If you are visiting the Chania area, follow any local guidance from authorities and avoid swimming or diving in any zones marked off by the coast guard until the area is declared safe.
