Island Overview
June 21 is the summer solstice, and Crete is delivering. Skies range from clear to partly cloudy across the island, with no rain expected anywhere. Daytime highs run from 25°C in Rethymno to just under 30°C in the east, making this a reliable beach day for nearly everyone on the island.
North Coast vs South and East
The north coast is a few degrees cooler and carrying more cloud. Hersonissos and Malia are both overcast today, though no rain is in the forecast; the cloud cover will take the edge off UV exposure but also mute the sunshine. Chania stands apart on the north coast with mainly clear skies and the lightest winds of the day at 12 km/h, making it the most comfortable city-beach option this morning. Rethymno and Heraklion sit in between, partly cloudy with moderate winds around 20 to 25 km/h.
The east and south present a different picture entirely. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda top the temperature charts at 29.8°C under mainly clear skies. Ierapetra on the south coast reaches 28.4°C with clear skies and the strongest winds of the day at 32 km/h, a typical early-meltemi pattern on the sheltered Libyan Sea side.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno are clear at altitude today. Hikers tackling the Samaria Gorge or any exposed ridge should carry at least two litres of water per person and apply sun protection before setting out. Shade above the treeline is minimal, and UV exposure increases with elevation.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 23°C and 25°C across all monitored stations, warm enough for comfortable and extended swimming. Wave heights are small to moderate: around 1 metre along the north coast, dropping to just 0.26 m off Ierapetra and 0.4 m at Makrigialos on the sheltered south shore. The east coast carries the strongest winds today, with Ierapetra at 32 km/h and Agios Nikolaos and Elounda around 29 km/h. These generate chop in open water but are not hazardous for normal beach use. The UV index sits at 8.1 to 8.5 across all stations, firmly in the very high band.
Swim Verdict
Good conditions island-wide. The south shore at Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the flattest water today, well suited to families and snorkelers. North-coast beaches carry a light to moderate swell, manageable for most swimmers. East-coast sheltered coves remain below 1 metre in wave height despite the wind. Water temperature across the island is warm enough to stay in for extended periods without discomfort.
Practical Tip for the Day
With UV at 8 or above everywhere on the island, sunburn is possible within 20 minutes of unprotected exposure around midday. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation, reapply after every swim, and seek shade between 11:00 and 15:00 if you are spending a full day outdoors. A hat and UV-blocking sunglasses are worth bringing regardless of cloud cover; diffuse UV penetrates overcast skies and will still reach your skin in Hersonissos or Malia today.
