Island Overview
A stable high-pressure system holds firm across Crete on 11 June 2026. Every reporting station from Chania to Sitia records clear skies and zero precipitation. Daytime highs range from 27.6°C in Sitia to 31.2°C in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. It is a straightforward summer day: warm, dry, and bright from first light to sunset.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast runs slightly cooler and breezier. Heraklion peaks at 29.6°C with the strongest winds of the day at 18 km/h; Rethymno and Chania stay in the upper 20s with gentler breezes around 13 km/h. Overnight lows along the north dip to the mid-to-upper teens, with Heraklion bottoming out at 16.8°C, making for comfortable sleeping.
The south coast retains more heat. Both Ierapetra and Makrigialos hold overnight minimums of 22.8°C, meaning warmth lingers well after dark. Makrigialos reaches 29.5°C during the day. The far east is the hottest zone: Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both top out at 31.2°C.
Mountain Conditions
The Psiloritis massif and the White Mountains shed several degrees for every 1,000 metres of altitude. Expect low-to-mid teens on the Nida plateau and around the Omalos plain. Clear skies make today a practical day for a high-altitude hike, provided you start early and carry enough water.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 23.0°C off Sitia to 24.5°C at Rethymno, comfortably warm for extended swims. Wave heights are negligible island-wide, peaking at 0.56 m off Malia. Winds remain below 20 km/h at every station, with the lightest air over Ierapetra at 10 km/h.
UV peaks between 8.2 and 8.5 across the island, placing today firmly in the very high band on the WHO scale. Unprotected skin can begin to burn in under 20 minutes around solar noon.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent from end to end. Calm water, warm sea temperatures, and no swell of note. Any beach on the island is safe and inviting today.
Practical Tip
Very high UV is the one factor that needs managing. Apply SPF 50 before heading out, reapply after every swim, and seek shade between noon and 15:00. Heraklion's Koules fortress and Chania's covered market make good midday retreats if direct sun becomes too much.
