Back to newsThe Heraklion Prefecture Hotel Association has formally opposed a proposed migrant and asylum seeker reception facility in the Municipality of Hersonissos, one of the most visited tourist areas in Greece. In a letter addressed to local and national authorities, hoteliers argue the facility would negatively affect the municipality, which they describe as the largest tourist destination in the country. Hersonissos, located on the northern coast of Crete roughly 26 kilometers east of Heraklion, is home to major resort areas including Malia and Stalis. At this stage, no facility has been confirmed or opened. The debate is ongoing between local business representatives and government bodies. Visitors planning to travel to the Hersonissos area should expect no current disruption to tourism services, accommodation, or access to beaches and attractions in the region.
