Back to newsA conference titled "From the Sea to Memory: The Wreck of the Tanais and the Memory of the Holocaust" will take place in Chania from July 11 to 13, 2026, at the Centre of Mediterranean Architecture (KAM). The event explores the story of the Tanais, a ship wrecked off the coast of Crete during World War II while transporting Jewish deportees, connecting maritime history with Holocaust remembrance. The conference brings together historians, researchers, and community representatives to examine this lesser-known chapter of Cretan wartime history. Visitors interested in history, Jewish heritage, or World War II are welcome to attend. The Centre of Mediterranean Architecture is located in the old town of Chania, easily accessible on foot from the Venetian harbor.
