Turkish Companies Breach Greek Feta's PDO Protection

Saturday, 4 July 2026/SourceNaftemporiki/1 min read
Greek feta cheese holds Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, meaning only cheese produced in specific regions of Greece can legally carry the feta name. However, Turkish dairy companies have been labeling their products as "Feta," raising concerns among Greek agricultural authorities nearly nine months ago. The Panhellenic Federation of Agricultural Public Employees has flagged a consular document that appears to have been overlooked in addressing the issue. For tourists shopping in Crete, this serves as a reminder to look for the PDO label when purchasing feta to ensure authenticity. Genuine Greek feta is made from sheep's milk or a blend with goat's milk and carries a distinctive tangy flavor. When buying at local markets or supermarkets, check for the red and yellow PDO seal on the packaging.
