Back to newsThe 5th Popular Race honoring Louis Tikas took place in the Rethymno region of Crete, with Giorgos Koutroupolis crossing the finish line first. The event commemorates Tikas, a local hero born in the village of Loutra who emigrated to the United States and became a prominent labor organizer. He was killed during the Ludlow Massacre in Colorado in 1914 and remains a symbol of courage and workers' rights.
On the occasion of the race, Giorgos Stavroulakis, grandson of Louis Tikas's brother, opened the family's ancestral home in Loutra. The home is set to be converted into a museum dedicated to Tikas's life and legacy. Visitors interested in local history can look out for the museum's future opening. The village of Loutra is located inland from Rethymno, accessible by car from the city center.
