A pet dog died at Kaloi Limenes beach, in the Heraklion region of Crete, after eating a toxic pufferfish that had washed ashore. The dog passed away within 30 minutes of consuming the fish. Pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison with no known antidote, which is lethal to both animals and humans. Incidents involving pufferfish washing up on Greek beaches have been increasing in recent years, likely linked to warming Mediterranean waters. Tourists visiting Crete's beaches should never touch, handle, or allow pets or children near any unfamiliar fish found on the shore.
