Crete Taxi Driver Doubles Fare, Refuses Meter in Tourist Dispute

Two tourists in Crete have filed a complaint against a taxi driver who allegedly refused to use the taximeter and doubled the agreed fare mid-journey, demanding 80 euros instead of the originally quoted 40 euros. When confronted, the driver reportedly stated "I'm the one in charge here." This type of dispute is an occasional issue in popular tourist destinations across Greece. Visitors are advised to always insist the taximeter is activated at the start of any taxi ride, or agree on a fixed price in writing before departure. Licensed taxis in Crete are required by law to use a taximeter. If a driver refuses or attempts to change the fare during the journey, passengers have the right to report the incident to local tourist police by calling 171.
