Back to newsFirefighters in Heraklion have raised concerns about two critical issues ahead of this summer's fire season: severe traffic congestion and understaffing within the fire service. The warnings follow serious difficulties encountered during a recent wildfire at Agios Ioannis Chostos, where response times were hampered by road conditions and insufficient personnel on the ground.
Fire service representatives are calling on authorities to address both problems before peak season, when dry conditions and high winds significantly increase wildfire risk across Crete.
For visitors traveling in and around Heraklion this summer, be aware that road congestion can delay emergency services. If you are staying in rural or hillside areas, identify your nearest evacuation route on arrival. Avoid lighting fires outdoors, including barbecues, in non-designated areas. In case of emergency, call 199 for the fire service.
