Greece Tourism Surge Strains Airports as Summer Season Peaks

Sunday, 21 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece is recording a 37% surge in tourism revenue in 2026, reflecting record visitor numbers across the country, including Crete. This growth is creating significant pressure on transport infrastructure, with reported congestion and disruptions at Athens International Airport and several island airports. Travelers connecting through Athens to Crete should expect longer wait times, potential flight delays, and crowded terminals, particularly during peak summer months. To minimize disruption, book direct flights to Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ) where possible, arrive at airports well ahead of departure, and confirm flight status before traveling. Ferries between Athens (Piraeus) and Crete remain an alternative for flexible travelers. High demand also means accommodations and rental vehicles book out earlier than in previous years, so advance reservations are strongly advised.
