Crete launches long-delayed water infrastructure push

Wednesday, 13 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Construction work is set to begin on two major water infrastructure projects in Crete: the Bramianon dam in the Lasithi region and the Myrtos dam near Ierapetra. Both projects have been delayed for some time and their launch was announced at a regional development forum held in Heraklion. In parallel, the Platys dam is entering the public tender process, marking another step forward for water management across the island. Authorities are also discussing a unified water supply pipeline that would run along the BOAK, the east-west highway currently under construction across Crete. These investments aim to improve water supply reliability for both residents and the agricultural sector. Tourists are unlikely to experience direct disruption, though construction activity near the BOAK corridor may cause localized traffic slowdowns on routes connecting central and eastern Crete.
