Heraklion's Summer Power Crisis Threatens Tourism Sector

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Business associations in Heraklion have raised formal concerns with the Greek electricity network operator (DEDDIE) over repeated daily power outages and voltage fluctuations affecting the city. The organization OEVENI, representing local businesses, warns that the disruptions are damaging expensive commercial equipment and posing a growing risk to the tourism sector during the peak summer season. For visitors, these outages may cause temporary interruptions to air conditioning, hotel facilities, restaurant services, and electronic payments in affected areas of Heraklion. Businesses near the city center and tourist zones appear most impacted. Authorities have been formally notified and are expected to address the infrastructure issue, though no resolution timeline has been announced. Travelers staying in Heraklion are advised to keep portable chargers handy and confirm with accommodations whether backup power systems are in place.
