Back to newsIn June 1975, a French administrator representing the International Fund for the Protection of Birds of Prey visited Samaria Gorge in western Crete. The visit highlighted the gorge's significance not only as a natural landmark but also as a habitat for rare raptors, drawing international conservation attention to the region. Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of the Chania regional unit, stretches approximately 16 kilometers and is one of Europe's longest gorges. It has long attracted wildlife experts and nature enthusiasts alongside regular tourists. Today, the gorge remains a protected national park and a top destination for hikers visiting Crete. The trail is open seasonally, typically from May to October, and requires a full day for the hike. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, carry water, and check park opening hours before departure.
