A clear summer day across the island

Crete on 22 June 2026 is firmly in summer mode. Skies are clear or near-clear from Chania to Sitia, with zero precipitation expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures range from 26°C on the north-central coast to just under 31°C in the far east, making this a hot but manageable day for outdoor activity provided you respect the sun.

North coast versus south and east

The most noticeable contrast today is between the milder north-central coast and the hotter east and south. Chania peaks at 26.5°C with a light breeze of 14 km/h, and Rethymno reaches 25.7°C. Moving east, Heraklion climbs to 27.9°C with winds around 24 km/h, while Hersonissos and Malia sit at 26°C with a moderate 20 km/h sea breeze. The real heat concentrates in Lasithi prefecture: Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both approach 31°C, and Ierapetra on the south coast records the island's highest overnight low at 25.5°C, leaving little relief after sunset. The south coast also carries the strongest winds of the day, with Ierapetra at 33 km/h and Makrigialos at 29 km/h. Both towns are sheltered enough that wave heights remain well below 0.5 metres despite the wind.

Mountain conditions

At altitude the picture changes sharply. Expect temperatures a good 10 to 15°C below coastal readings on the upper slopes of the White Mountains above Chania and on Psiloritis above Rethymno. Hikers heading into the Samaria Gorge should bring a light layer for the early descent from Xyloskalo at around 1,200 metres, where it will feel noticeably cool before the gorge warms through mid-morning.

Sea state, wind and UV

Sea temperatures sit between 23.2°C at Sitia and 24.8°C at Ierapetra, warm enough for comfortable swimming across the island. Wave heights reach 1.0 to 1.14 metres at Sitia, Malia and Elounda, producing a pleasant but gentle surf. More sheltered spots including Ierapetra at 0.26 m and Makrigialos at 0.42 m offer flat-water conditions. UV peaks between 8.2 and 8.6 island-wide, which the World Health Organisation classifies as Very High. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes at midday.

Swim verdict

Conditions are good to excellent across the island. Water is warm, waves are moderate or calm, and the slight chop on open beaches is refreshing rather than problematic. If flat-calm water is a priority, the south coast around Ierapetra and Makrigialos is the best choice today. Open-sea beaches along the north coast will have a gentle roll.

Tip for the day

Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before you leave your accommodation, not after you arrive at the beach. A UV index of 8+ means meaningful exposure begins well before midday. Reapply every 90 minutes if you are swimming or sweating. Seek shade between 11:00 and 16:00, especially if you are travelling with young children or have fair skin.
