Monday 16 June 2026 is a dry, settled day across all of Crete. Precipitation is zero at every monitored location, skies range from clear to partly cloudy, and temperatures sit between 25 and 29°C. There are no weather hazards of any kind on the island today.
North coast and south coast
The north coast has the cleaner skies today. Heraklion, Hersonissos and Malia all report mainly clear conditions with highs of 28 to 29°C. Chania is clear all day, peaking at 28°C, while Rethymno reaches 27°C under mainly clear skies. Overnight lows vary noticeably along the north: Heraklion dips to a relatively fresh 15.5°C, while Chania stays warm at 19.8°C.
The south coast and far east carry more cloud. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are partly cloudy throughout the day, and Ierapetra records the island's lowest daytime high at 25.5°C. It compensates with the warmest overnight minimum on the island at 20.9°C. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda in the northeast reach 28 to 29°C under partly cloudy skies, and Sitia sits at 28°C with mainly clear conditions.
Mountain conditions
Higher elevations above Chania in the White Mountains and across the Psiloritis massif will be noticeably cooler than the coast. Conditions are calm and clear at altitude today, which makes this a good morning for gorge walks. The Samaria Gorge and other long routes are best started before 08:00 to avoid the return hike in peak midday heat.
Sea state, wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures range from 23.4°C at Sitia to 24.5°C at Heraklion and Rethymno, well into the comfortable range for extended swimming. Wave heights are very low across the island: most locations sit below 0.30 m, with Chania seeing the highest swell of the day at 0.72 m. Winds are light everywhere, peaking at 13.6 km/h in Heraklion and below 12 km/h across most other locations. UV index values reach 8.3 to 8.6 at midday, placing them firmly in the very high category. At these levels, unprotected skin can begin to burn in under 20 minutes.
Swim verdict
Swimming conditions are excellent island-wide. The sea is calm, warm and clear at all monitored coastal towns. Chania's swell of 0.72 m is noticeable but well within comfortable limits for adults. Every other coast is essentially flat today. There is no reason to avoid the water.
Practical tip for 16 June: Sun protection is the priority on a day like this. With UV above 8 from late morning through early afternoon, apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. A beach umbrella between 11:00 and 16:00 will prevent the kind of sunburn that derails the rest of a holiday.
