Crete Boasts Mediterranean's Warmest Waters: Swim All Summer Long

Saturday, 4 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Sea water temperatures around Crete vary by season and location, making it one of the warmest swimming destinations in the Mediterranean. In summer, the sea reaches its peak warmth between July and September, with temperatures typically ranging from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius along the southern coast, which benefits from warmer African currents. The northern coast, facing the Aegean, tends to run slightly cooler. Swimming is comfortable from late May through October. The eastern bays around Elounda and Sitia and the sheltered lagoons of the south, such as Preveli and Matala, are among the warmest spots on the island. Visitors planning a beach holiday should note that late August offers the warmest water, while early June and late October provide pleasant conditions with fewer crowds.
