Back to newsA pufferfish was recently spotted at Marathi Beach in Crete, raising concern among locals and beachgoers. Pufferfish, known scientifically as Lagocephalus species, have become increasingly common in Mediterranean waters due to rising sea temperatures and are considered an invasive species in the region. While they are not aggressive, pufferfish are highly toxic if touched or handled, and contact with their spines can cause irritation or injury.
Tourists visiting Marathi Beach and other beaches along the northern Crete coastline are advised to stay alert while swimming and to avoid touching any unfamiliar fish encountered in the water or washed ashore. If you spot a pufferfish, do not approach it. Notify beach staff or local authorities immediately. Children should be kept away from any fish found on the shore. The sighting does not pose a significant threat to swimmers who exercise normal caution.
