Back to newsSix volunteer rescue groups in the Chania region of Crete have received automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and CPR training mannequins as part of a regional emergency preparedness program. The equipment strengthens first-response capacity across the prefecture, meaning faster medical assistance is available at public events, beaches, and remote areas where these volunteer teams operate. For tourists, this is a positive development: trained volunteers with AEDs are increasingly present at popular sites around Chania. If you witness a cardiac emergency while visiting Crete, call 166 (ambulance) immediately and ask bystanders whether a defibrillator is nearby. Knowing basic CPR before you travel is always advisable, particularly if you plan to hike or visit less-populated areas of the island.
