Crete Issues Orange Alert for Extreme Wildfire Risk

Sunday, 5 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Crete is on orange alert for very high wildfire risk today, Sunday July 5, 2026, according to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection. This is one of the highest warning levels issued by Greek authorities and affects multiple regions across the island. Visitors should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or disposing of cigarettes outdoors anywhere in Crete today. Do not park vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust pipes can ignite vegetation. If you are hiking or exploring rural and forested areas, be aware of your surroundings and know the nearest exit route. If you see smoke or flames, call the fire service immediately at 199. Avoid driving through smoke-affected roads. Hotel and villa guests should follow instructions from local staff. Conditions are expected to remain dangerous due to strong winds and low humidity typical of this period.
