Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greece's Migration Minister Thanos Plevris has officially confirmed that a migrant reception facility will be established at the former Skouloudis warehouses in Heraklion, Crete. The announcement was made directly to the regional governor and the mayor of Heraklion, putting an end to speculation about the location. The Skouloudis warehouses are a large former industrial and storage complex in the city. The facility is intended to provide structured accommodation and processing for migrants arriving in the region. For visitors to Heraklion, no disruption to tourism, ports, or main attractions is expected. The city center, the Archaeological Museum, Koules Fortress, and the harbor area remain fully accessible. Travelers should be aware that local civic discussions around the facility are ongoing, but day-to-day tourism activity in Heraklion continues as normal.
