Work is underway on the road leading to Chania Airport, where crews have begun digging trenches to install standalone lighting poles. The project starts from the Profitis Ilias junction near Kounoupidiana and extends along the airport approach route. While the new lighting will improve visibility and safety on this stretch after dark, local reports note that road widening, a long-discussed improvement for this busy corridor, does not appear to be included in the current works. Tourists driving to or from Chania Airport should expect occasional lane disruptions and possible delays near the Kounoupidiana junction during the installation period. Allow extra travel time if catching a flight, and follow any temporary signage in place along the route.
