Heavy Rainfall Hits Crete, Highest Levels in Askyfou and Kerameía

Saturday, 25 April 2026/Haniotika Nea/1
Heavy rainfall hit parts of Crete on Friday, with the villages of Askyfou and Kerameía recording the highest precipitation levels on the island. The data was shared publicly by Kostas Lagouvardos, research director at the National Observatory of Greece and meteo.gr, along with satellite imagery showing the distribution of rainfall across the region. Both areas are located in the mountainous interior of the Sfakia prefecture in southwestern Crete. Roads in this part of the island can become hazardous during and after heavy rain due to steep terrain and limited drainage. If you are planning to drive through the Askyfou plateau or the villages west of the White Mountains, check road conditions before setting out and allow extra time. Mountain hiking trails in the area may also be slippery. Monitor meteo.gr for updated forecasts before outdoor activities.
