Back to newsThe Red Cross has issued its first official warning to holidaymakers about pufferfish sightings in the Mediterranean Sea around Greece. Pufferfish, an invasive species spreading through Mediterranean waters, are toxic and pose a health risk if touched or consumed. Swimmers and snorkelers along Cretan beaches should avoid contact with any pufferfish they encounter in the water. The fish are not aggressive and will not chase swimmers, but their spines and internal organs contain a powerful toxin. Fishermen are also advised to handle accidental catches with care and release them without touching the flesh. If contact occurs or a fish is accidentally consumed, seek medical attention immediately. Local beach authorities and the Red Cross recommend staying informed through posted beach notices and asking lifeguards about recent sightings in your area before entering the water.
