Back to newsTwo earthquakes struck the waters off Gavdos, a small island located south of Crete, in close succession. Gavdos is the southernmost point of Greece, situated roughly 65 kilometers south of the Sfakia coastline in the Libyan Sea.
Seismic activity in this region is not unusual, as the southern Aegean and eastern Mediterranean sit along active tectonic fault lines. Double or sequential earthquakes, where a second tremor follows shortly after the first, are a recognized pattern in this zone.
Authorities have not reported damage, casualties, or tsunami warnings at this time. Tourists staying along Crete's southern coast, including areas around Sfakia, Plakias, or Paleochora, should remain calm and follow any guidance issued by local civil protection services. Check with your accommodation if you feel a tremor and move away from the shoreline as a precaution until an all-clear is confirmed.
