Back to newsGreek Infrastructure Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis has announced a definitive resolution to outstanding land compensation disputes blocking construction of Section 3 of the BOAK highway, the major east-west road crossing Crete. The affected stretch connects Agios Nikolaos, the scenic capital of Lasithi prefecture in eastern Crete, with the inland town of Neapoli. Settling these compensation claims with landowners clears a significant legal and administrative hurdle that had stalled progress on this portion of the route. For visitors, completion of the BOAK will eventually reduce travel times between central and eastern Crete considerably, making destinations like Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and the Lasithi plateau more accessible from Heraklion. Construction timelines remain subject to further progress, so travellers heading east should continue to budget extra time on existing roads for now.
