Back to newsTourism and business organizations across Crete have jointly written to Greece's Minister of Infrastructure and Transport requesting two key changes to how roadworks are managed on the BOAK highway, the main east-west motorway crossing the island. The organizations are asking for advance notice before any planned traffic interruptions, so that businesses, tour operators, and travelers can plan accordingly. They are also requesting that heavy construction work be scheduled during nighttime hours to reduce disruption during peak travel times. The BOAK is the primary route connecting Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania, and eastern Crete. Visitors driving between destinations should monitor local traffic updates before setting out, as construction-related closures can significantly affect journey times, particularly during the busy summer season.
