Crete Approves €87M Water Reservoirs for Drought Relief

Friday, 26 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Two new water reservoirs totaling 87 million euros have been approved for construction in the eastern Crete towns of Ierapetra and Sitia. The projects, previously dropped from Greece's Recovery Fund, have secured alternative financing, with construction contracts set to be signed in July 2026. The dams are designed to improve water management in one of the driest regions of Crete, where summer droughts and agricultural demand frequently strain local water supplies. Ierapetra and Sitia are popular destinations on the eastern coast, known for their beaches, Minoan sites, and access to the island of Chrissi. Visitors to the area should be aware that preliminary construction activity may begin in the coming months. Long term, the projects aim to ensure more reliable water availability across the region, benefiting both residents and the growing tourism infrastructure in eastern Crete.
