Crete Pothole Returns Like Mythical Bridge of Arta After 20 Days

Sunday, 26 April 2026/CretaOne/1
A large pothole in the Agios Ioannis district of Chania has been repaired and reopened to traffic, only to reappear within 20 days, mirroring the Greek folk tale of the Bridge of Arta, which collapsed each night after being built during the day. The road defect has been a recurring problem in this area of western Crete. Tourists driving through the Agios Ioannis neighborhood should remain alert for uneven road surfaces and possible temporary closures while municipal crews carry out repeated repairs. Local authorities have yet to announce a permanent solution. If you are renting a car and passing through Chania, allow extra time and follow any posted detour signs in the area until the road surface is fully stabilized.
