Saint George Assaris Monastery

The temple of Saint George (Agios Georgios) at Assari belonged to a small monastery, which is now a dependency of Panagia Faneromeni monastery . Around there are traces of the cells and auxiliary buildings of the monastery that operated during the Venetian occupation and were used as houses of farmers in the area, after it was destroyed.

The monastery has not been dated in detail, as there are no surviving documents, but it was already deserted in the 19th century. The church has 14th century frescoes with icons from the Gospel cycle (eg Birth), six scenes from the life of Saint George and the Mother of God cycle (Presentation and Dormition of the Virgin Mary).

Also visible is the scene of the Sacrifice of Abraham on the north wall and the rare depiction of the Dormition of Saint Ephrem the Syrian , met again in Crete only in the church of Saint John in Kapetaniana .
