Leggi la storia

The cave of Peristeras is located at the northwestern edge of the plateau Limnakaro , south of the village Avrakontes at Lassithi . Its name is taken after the wild pigeons that nested here, attracting hunters from the local villages.

It was found that in the Middle Minoan period it was used mainly for funerary purposes. Later, during the Venetian and the Ottoman occupation of Crete, the cave served as a hideout of the rebels of Lassithi province.

Today, the entrance of the cave is blocked by giant rocks, hindering the tour in the cave, despite the ladder that has been installed by local authorities. The interior of Peristeras has rich decoration, mainly stalagmites and stalactites.
