Leggi la storia

The church of Panagia in Sklavopoula , region of Selino, belongs to the architectural type of the one-storey arched-roofed and is dedicated to the Dormition of Theotokos . Inside it bears frescoes dating from the first half of the 14th century and attributed to a very capable hagiographer who introduced to Crete the developments of the Paleologic style (from Constantinople), probably sponsored by the strong family Kallergis .

The iconographic program includes scenes of the Mariological and Christological circles in the arch, the founder and military saints on the side walls and the great depiction of the Second Coming with the Apostles on the west wall. The sanctuary hosts Our Lady in the conch, hierarchs before Melismus lower in the semicircle, and Abraham's Hospitality and Evangelism on the drum.
