Balkan Green Lizard

The Balkan Green Lizard (scient. Lacerta trilineata ) is the largest lizard in Crete (and in Greece), which is known for its intense green color.

In Crete, apart from the main subspecies Lacerta trilineata trilineata , there is also the subspecies Lacerta trilineata polylepidota . The green lizards are completely harmless, although some consider them poisonous.

Its length (excluding the tail) reaches 16cm and the overall length with the tail may exceed 45cm. It is a diurnal lizard that likes moving on the ground.

It feeds on invertebrates, insects and smaller lizards and snakes . Female lizards lay 6-20 eggs, which hatch in 30 days.
