Island Overview
A stable high-pressure system covers Crete on 24 August 2026, delivering unbroken sunshine and zero rainfall from Kissamos to Sitia. Daytime highs range from 30°C in Rethymno and Sitia to 34°C in Makrigialos on the south coast. Overnight temperatures remain well above 23°C everywhere, making this a typical late-summer Cretan day with no weather disruptions expected.
North vs South: A Clear Divide
The north coast towns of Chania, Rethymno, Hersonissos, and Malia sit in the 31°C range today, moderated by the meltemi, the seasonal northerly wind that pushes gusts to 19-23 km/h between Heraklion and the north-central coast. Heraklion itself reaches 32.6°C with wind speeds up to 23 km/h, comfortable for beach days but less suited to paddle sports requiring calm water.
The south coast is a different environment. Shielded from the meltemi by the island's mountain spine, Ierapetra and Makrigialos are both hotter and calmer. Makrigialos peaks at 34°C with winds below 15 km/h. Ierapetra's overnight low of 29.2°C is the highest minimum on the island today; heat stored in the south rarely dissipates before dawn. Visitors sensitive to intense heat should plan south coast activities before 9 a.m.
The Interior and Mountain Areas
The Lefka Ori above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Rethymno offer the only real respite from the heat. Above 1,000 metres, temperatures run 10 to 12°C cooler than the coast with a reliable breeze. The Samaria and Imbros gorges are walkable today, but an early start of no later than 7:30 a.m. is advisable to clear the canyon floor well before midday heat peaks.
Sea State, Wind, and UV
Sea surface temperatures range from 26.2°C to 27.2°C across all monitored points, among the warmest readings Cretan waters reach in a calendar year. Wave heights are low: 0.4 m on the sheltered south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos, rising to 0.82-0.88 m at Chania, Sitia, and Malia on the north and east. The UV index peaks at 7.95 in Rethymno, rated high on the WHO scale, and holds between 7.7 and 7.8 across the rest of the island. At these levels, unprotected skin can burn in under 25 minutes during midday hours.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good to excellent for swimming island-wide. The south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the flattest water, best suited to families and less confident swimmers. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos on the north-east combine warm water (26.5°C) with small swell. North coast beaches from Hersonissos to Malia will have a light chop from the meltemi, refreshing rather than disruptive for most swimmers. No adverse conditions are indicated at any monitored point today.
Practical Tip for Today
Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation, not at the beach, since sunscreen needs 15 minutes to bind to skin before sun exposure. Reapply every 90 minutes and immediately after each swim. Carry at least one litre of water per person per hour of outdoor activity, particularly on the south coast where the combination of high heat and low wind accelerates dehydration. Midday shade is not optional today.
