Island Overview
Saturday 30 May brings a grey but warm start to the weekend across Crete. A layer of low cloud sits over most of the island, with patchy fog reported at Heraklion and Rethymno through the morning. No rain is expected anywhere. Daytime highs range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius, and dry conditions make this a workable beach day once the cloud begins to thin.
North Coast
The north-facing cities wake under fog or thick overcast. Heraklion sees a high of 25 degrees, with morning fog likely clearing by mid-morning and a light northerly breeze at 16 km/h. Chania is overcast with a slightly brisker wind at 20 km/h and a high of 26 degrees. Rethymno stays the coolest of the northern cities at 24 degrees, also under fog. Hersonissos and Malia share the calmest winds on the island at just 11 km/h, making the central north coast particularly sheltered today.
South and East
The south coast runs noticeably warmer overnight. Ierapetra records the highest minimum on the island at 21 degrees and a daytime high of 26, though it also faces the strongest winds at 25 km/h. Makrigialos sits at 26 degrees under overcast skies with moderate winds. In the east, Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda tie for the island's warmest high at 27 degrees. Sitia stays cooler at 23 degrees with a 20 km/h breeze and the choppiest seas of the day.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are shrouded in cloud today. Hikers heading above 1,200 metres should expect reduced visibility and noticeably cooler temperatures. Gorge paths including Samaria remain accessible at lower elevations, but check local conditions before committing to a full descent.
Sea, Wind, and UV
Sea temperatures sit at 21 to 22 degrees Celsius across all monitored points. Wave heights are modest, between 0.36 and 0.68 metres, with the slight chop concentrated in the east near Sitia and Elounda. UV index values range from 7.6 to 8.0, placing the whole island in the high category. Cloud cover does not block UV effectively, and sun protection is necessary even when the sky looks grey and flat.
Swim Verdict and Practical Tip
Conditions are good for swimming island-wide. The sea is calm, temperatures are comfortable, and no coastal advisories are in place. The sheltered bays around Elounda, Hersonissos, and Rethymno offer the easiest entry. Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation. UV at index 8 under overcast skies is the most common cause of unexpected sunburn among visitors who assume cloud equals no exposure.
