Pufferfish Surge in Crete Waters Sparks Swimmer Safety Warning

Monday, 22 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Pufferfish have been spotted in increasing numbers across Mediterranean waters, including around Crete, prompting warnings for swimmers and snorkelers. These fish, which can grow up to 50 cm, carry tetrodotoxin, a poison with no antidote that is highly toxic if ingested. Their flesh is lethal and should never be eaten under any circumstances. While pufferfish do not typically attack humans, they have sharp, beak-like teeth capable of delivering a painful bite if handled or disturbed. Beachgoers are advised not to touch any pufferfish found in the water or washed ashore. If you spot a pufferfish on a beach, do not handle it and alert local authorities. Seek immediate medical attention if bitten. Enjoy the sea, but keep a safe distance from these animals.
