Back to newsCrete has installed two new fire risk monitoring stations in the Rethymno and Lasithi regions, providing hourly updates on wildfire danger levels across the island. Fire meteorologist Th. Giannaros warns that conditions are expected to become significantly more hazardous after July, making the second half of summer particularly challenging. Tourists visiting between August and September should stay informed about fire risk levels in their area, avoid lighting fires or barbecues in open or forested areas, and follow instructions from local authorities. When hiking or exploring rural and mountainous areas, check daily fire danger forecasts before heading out. In the event of a wildfire nearby, follow evacuation routes and contact local emergency services at 199 (fire service) or 112 (general emergency).
