Crete Hosts Conference on Religious Fundamentalism and Sacred Monuments

Tuesday, 23 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
An international conference on religious fundamentalism and the protection of religious monuments recently took place in Crete, organized by the International Observatory on Religious Fundamentalism with support from the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupolis, Traianoupolis and Samothrace, and the Greek Ministry of Education's General Secretariat of Religious Affairs. The event brought together scholars, clergy, and officials to discuss threats to sacred heritage sites and strategies for their preservation. Crete is home to numerous significant religious monuments, including Byzantine churches, Venetian cathedrals, and ancient shrines, many of which are open to visitors. Tourists interested in religious and cultural heritage can explore these sites across the island, particularly in Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. No disruptions to tourist access at religious sites are expected as a result of this event.
