Back to newsThe Greek Fire Service has placed Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi on high fire danger alert for Sunday, July 12. These three regional units cover most of central and eastern Crete, and all appear on the national fire risk prediction map alongside 11 other areas across Greece.
Fire crews are on heightened standby throughout the day. Conditions typical of mid-July, including dry vegetation, high temperatures, and strong winds, increase the likelihood of wildfires spreading quickly.
Tourists are advised to avoid lighting fires or barbecues in open areas, including beaches and hillsides. Do not discard cigarettes outdoors. Stay on marked paths when hiking, and avoid forested or scrubland areas during peak afternoon heat. If you spot smoke or flames, call the emergency fire service number 199 immediately. Check local conditions before heading inland or to rural areas.
